BUSANGA PLAINS

ZAMBIA

Budget : Premium Safari*

"WILDEST AFRICA"

The secret jewel of Kafue

In the northern part of Kafue National Park, the Busanga Plains stretch for kilometres across flooded savannahs, which in the dry season transform into a sea of golden grasses.

It is one of the most striking landscapes in southern Africa, where the horizon seems endless and wildlife thrives far from human presence. Home to iconic lion coalitions, as well as cheetahs, African wild dogs, elephants and abundant antelope, the Busanga Plains offer some of the most intense safari experiences on the continent. Hardly visited, they retain an "end of the world" atmosphere, where morning mists and golden light create magical conditions for wildlife observation and photography.

An exclusive setting for exceptional safaris

The Busanga Plains are accessible only in the dry season, from June to October, when the plains emerge from the waters. It’s a rare and precious window when spectacular wildlife gathers, set against a backdrop of morning mist and golden light.

A unique playground for wildlife photography enthusiasts!

Dry season

From June to October

This is the only period when the Busanga Plains are accessible. The water gradually recedes, revealing vast grassy expanses where predators and herbivores concentrate. Lions, often in large coalitions, dominate these plains, joined by cheetahs and occasionally even African wild dogs. Morning mists add a magical atmosphere to the safari,  perfect for photography.

Rainy season

From November to May

During the rains, the plains are entirely flooded, transformed into an impassable swamp. Wildlife disperses to other areas of Kafue National Park, and camps in the region close their doors. This inaccessibility contributes to the exclusive and wild character of the Busanga Plains.

Shoulder season

From November to May

In May, the water gradually withdraws and the first dry patches already attract wildlife, preparing the safari season. In November, just before the major rains, the plains experience intense animal activity: predators and herbivores take advantage of the last resources before the camps close.

In short...

If you love wild and remote experiences, authentic safari camps, incredible wildlife density and photographic encounters with lions, leopards, wild dogs, elephants and more, then this is the destination for you.

Testimonials

Your feedback is my greatest source of pride.
