"OUT OF AFRICA"

A land of contrasts and endemic fauna

In northern Kenya, far from the crowds, the Samburu National Reserve reveals a raw, unspoilt Africa, where nature reigns supreme. Here, arid plains, steep hills and rivers lined with doum palms make up a striking landscape, sculpted by the Ewaso Ng'iro River, a veritable source of life in this semi-desert region. It is around its banks that wildlife congregates, offering exceptional viewing scenes.

Although Samburu is home to a great diversity of animals, it is best known for its emblematic species, grouped together under the name “Samburu Special Five”: the Grevy's zebra, the reticulated giraffe, the oryx beisa, the gerenuk and the Somali ostrich. These rare species, adapted to extreme conditions, live alongside numerous predators such as lions, leopards and cheetahs, as well as the shy striped hyena.

Far from the vast plains of southern Kenya, Samburu offers a unique safari experience, with 4x4 safaris, guided walks and riverside viewing, where elephants come during the dry season. But beyond the wildlife, this region is also the heartland of the Samburu people, whose traditions and way of life remain deeply rooted in the local culture.

With its breathtaking landscapes, rare fauna and cultural immersion, Samburu is an exceptional destination for lovers of nature and authenticity. Through patience and perseverance over the last few years, I've also been lucky enough to spot caracals, otoycons and proteles.

Rainy season

April to May & November to December

The first showers transform the Samburu Reserve, repainting the arid landscape in a patchwork of vibrant greens. Water reappears in the dry rivers, attracting a multitude of herbivores such as Grevy's zebra, oryx beisa and gerenuk, the region's characteristic long-necked antelope. It's also birthing season, an ideal time to observe the young animals and the interactions between prey and predators. Migratory birds flock in great numbers, adding a colorful dimension to the scenery.

Dry season

June to October & January to March

As water becomes scarcer, animals gather around the remaining rivers and waterholes, offering exceptional viewing scenes. Large predators such as lions, leopards and cheetahs are more visible, taking advantage of the concentration of prey. The Ewaso Ng'iro River, the lifeblood of Samburu, becomes a hub of activity for elephants and other large mammals. The golden light and clear skies make this the ideal time of year for photographic safaris, capturing the raw beauty of Samburu.
